if I have travelled the furtherest distance along a road say 1000 mtrs and a vehicle is coming in the opposite direction and has only travelled 50 yards and there are obstructions on both sides of the road who has right of way?

It doesn't matter who has travelled what distance, what matters is who is giving who priority. Priority should be given and not taken, so if the other road user is not giving you priority then you give it to him/her. Follow this simple rule and there will always be a respectful meeting where one driver is appreciative of the other. Don't follow it and there will almost certainly be one or two disgruntled drivers.
